“When I was a kid growing up in Detroit, drawing at my easel with a disability that kept my parents on their toes, I had a dream: to spend my life making art.

Dreaming about being an artist and actually building a professional, self-sustaining career are two very different things. Here is how I turned that dream into a reality and the path you can take to do the same.

My Roots: Resilience & Finding My Anchor

Growing up in Detroit, My biological father, an attorney who loved to paint, taught me the fundamentals early on. Throughout my life, whenever I faced varying tragedies and hardships, art wasn’t just a hobby, it was my primary coping mechanism and my anchor.

That foundation naturally carried me into AP Studio Art in high school and fine art classes in college. Back then, my early portfolio wasn't built with a business plan in mind; it was about exploring a distinct visual world and building my technical skills.

Look at these early works I created as a kid in high school. 👇

Moving From Fine Art to Commercial Success

Having a portfolio is one thing; making a living from it is an entirely different game.

For a long time, the art world relied strictly on gatekeepers, galleries, curators, and elite spaces that controlled who got seen. But the internet completely changed the rules. I realized that if I wanted to be a truly professional artist, I couldn't just wait to be discovered. I had to learn how to commercialize my work.

I had to figure out how to build an online following, set up automated e-commerce and drop-shipping models to handle fulfillment, and market myself authentically.

Looking back, trying to figure out the technical side of print-on-demand and digital sales without a roadmap ate up countless hours of studio time.

I made plenty of mistakes along the way. But once I cracked the code on bridging digital marketing with traditional art, everything shifted.

Stepping Into Public Spaces & Exhibitions

As my business systems grew online, my physical fine art presence grew right alongside it. Moving from isolated studio work into public residencies and major gallery exhibitions like my show at the Workhouse Arts Center alongside Cheryl (Perfect Mistakes), proved that you can blend modern digital income with traditional gallery credibility.
